If you’re preparing for the NMC CBT (Computer-Based Test) in 2024 or beyond, there’s an important update you need to be aware of. From 24th June 2024, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) has introduced trial questions to the CBT format. These changes are part of their ongoing efforts to ensure the Test of Competence (ToC) remains current, valid, and reflective of real-world healthcare practice in the UK.
At Fortuwest International Training and Education, we’re here to guide you through these updates and help you prepare with confidence.
What’s Changing in the NMC CBT?
Starting 24 June 2024, candidates attending the NMC CBT may see additional trial questions included in their test. These changes could appear in:
- Part A – Numeracy
- Part B – Clinical Questions
However, NMC has not specified where exactly these trial questions will be placed. Importantly:
🚫 No extra time will be added to your test.
✅ These trial questions are being tested for future inclusion and will not impact your final score.
NMC CBT Format (2024 Update)
Here’s a quick overview of what to expect when you sit for the CBT:
🧮 Part A: Numeracy
- Duration: 30 minutes
- Focus: Medication calculations and clinical math
💉 Part B: Clinical Questions
- Duration: 2 hours and 30 minutes
- Focus: Real-life clinical scenarios and evidence-based nursing practices
✅ Both parts are taken in one sitting, but are scored separately.
CBT Eligibility and Registration Process
Once your NMC Stage 1 registration is approved, you will receive an official invitation email from the NMC and Pearson VUE, allowing you to book and attend your CBT and OSCE exams.
You can take the CBT and OSCE in any order, but both must be completed within 2 years of attempting the first test.
