Australia has made it easier for internationally qualified nurses to begin their careers, introducing a faster and more streamlined registration process. The updated pathway, introduced by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), reduces unnecessary steps and helps eligible nurses enter the Australian healthcare workforce sooner.

Previously, internationally educated nurses often spent 9 to 12 months completing the registration process, which included bridging programs, assessments, and multiple regulatory requirements. Under the revised framework, many eligible applicants can now complete registration in as little as 1 to 6 months, depending on their qualifications and supporting documentation.

Who Is Eligible?

The streamlined registration process is designed for nurses who obtained their qualifications in NMBA-approved comparable jurisdictions. These currently include:

• United Kingdom
• Ireland
• United States
• Singapore
• Spain
• British Columbia and Ontario (Canada)

If you qualified in one of these approved jurisdictions, you may be eligible for a simplified registration pathway, provided you meet the required professional standards.

Registration Pathways

Pathway 1: Nurses from Comparable Jurisdictions

Applicants may be eligible for general registration if they:

• Have completed at least 1,800 hours of registered nursing practice since 1 January 2017.
• Hold current or previous general registration in an approved comparable jurisdiction.
• Provide an employer statement confirming their competence and professional performance.
• Obtain a Certificate of Good Standing from their nursing regulatory authority.
• Meet NMBA requirements for English language proficiency, criminal history checks, continuing professional development (CPD), recency of practice, and professional indemnity insurance.

Pathway 2: Nurses from Non-Comparable Jurisdictions

Nurses who qualified outside the approved jurisdictions may still be eligible if they:

• Successfully complete a regulatory examination in an NMBA-approved comparable jurisdiction.
• Hold current or previous general registration in a comparable jurisdiction since 1 January 2017.
• Have completed at least 1,800 hours of nursing practice in an approved comparable jurisdiction since 2017.
• Meet all additional NMBA registration standards, including English language, CPD, criminal history, recency of practice, and professional indemnity insurance requirements.
