Planning to take the NMC Computer-Based Test (CBT) in 2026? Booking your exam is straightforward once the NMC has confirmed that you need to complete the Test of Competence.
The CBT is Part 1 of the NMC Test of Competence (ToC). You must successfully complete both the CBT and the OSCE to continue your application for initial registration or readmission. The CBT and OSCE can be taken in any order.
Step 1: Wait for Your Pearson VUE Account
Once the NMC confirms that you need to take the Test of Competence, Pearson VUE, the current CBT test provider, will send you an email confirming that your account has been created and providing a temporary password.
Make sure to check your inbox and junk or spam folder for official Pearson VUE communications.
Step 2: Log In and Select “View Exams”
After receiving your account details, log in to your Pearson VUE account and select “View Exams.”
You will then need to choose the CBT that matches your NMC application type. Choosing the wrong examination can create problems with your registration application, so check carefully before confirming your booking.
The current exam series include:
- Registered Adult Nurse: NMC_RNA
- Registered Children’s Nurse: NMC_RNC
- Registered Mental Health Nurse: NMC_RNMH
- Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse: NMC_RNLD
- Registered Midwife: NMC_RM
- Registered Nursing Associate: NAR
Step 3: Select Both CBT Modules
For your first attempt, select both modules:
- Part A – Numeracy: 15 questions, 30 minutes
- Part B – Clinical: 100 questions, 2 hours and 30 minutes
The total CBT consists of 115 questions and has a total testing time of three hours, including optional breaks.
Step 4: Choose Your Test Centre and Date
Pearson VUE has CBT test centres in many countries around the world. Select an available location, date and appointment time that works for you.
Bookings can be made online or, where available, through Pearson VUE’s booking options. You should always check your appointment details carefully before completing payment.
Step 5: Pay the CBT Fee
In 2026, the fee for taking both Part A and Part B together is £83.
If you need to resit only one part, the current fees are:
- Part A resit: £50
- Part B resit: £70
- Both parts resit: £83
What Happens After the CBT?
Your CBT result is recorded in your NMC application. Part A and Part B are passed independently, so if you pass one part and fail the other, you only need to resit the part you did not pass, subject to the NMC’s attempt and timing rules.
The NMC currently allows up to three attempts within one year, with a minimum of 10 days between sittings. After three unsuccessful attempts, the application closes, and a new application can be made after the required waiting period.
