OSCE day can feel demanding: you move between stations, face unfamiliar scenarios, and work within strict time limits. A simple plan can help you stay composed and give each station your full attention.
Get ready before you arrive
Check the exam instructions in advance so you know where to go, when to arrive, and what you can bring. Plan your journey and allow extra time. The night before, prepare what you need and try to follow your usual routine rather than cramming late into the evening.
Read the station instructions carefully
At each station, use the reading time to identify the task, the patient’s situation, and any specific instructions. Notice whether you are being asked to take a history, examine a system, explain a plan, or perform another task.
When the station starts, begin with a clear introduction. Keep track of time, but avoid rushing so much that you skip consent, safety checks, or a clear explanation. If you are unsure how to proceed, stay calm, explain your reasoning, and continue with the parts of the task you can complete.
Reset between stations
When a station ends, let it go. Replaying a difficult moment can distract you from the next task. Take a slow breath, relax your shoulders, and focus on the new instructions.
If you make a mistake, recover and carry on. A single awkward answer or missed step does not determine the rest of your exam. Concentrate on communicating clearly and treating each patient respectfully.
Look after yourself
Eat and drink as appropriate before the exam, and use breaks to reset. After the OSCE, give yourself time to decompress before reviewing your performance. The goal on exam day is to stay focused enough to show your skills one station at a time.
