IELTS remains a major English-language testing option for people planning to study, work or pursue professional opportunities internationally. However, several developments in 2026 make it especially important for candidates to understand the current testing environment.

Here are five updates worth knowing.

1. IELTS Is Moving Away From Paper-Based Testing

IELTS announced that from mid-2026, paper-based IELTS will no longer be offered, with implementation timelines varying by market.

The transition is designed to make computer delivery the standard while maintaining the same assessment standards.

2. Writing on Paper Is Available in Selected Markets

Candidates who prefer handwriting can use the new Writing on Paper option where it is available.

Listening and Reading are completed on computer, while Writing responses are handwritten. The task types, scoring and time allocation remain the same.

This option is not available for IELTS for UKVI.

3. IELTS Test Report Forms Have Been Updated

From 15 July 2026, IELTS Test Report Forms include the Ofqual logo and qualification title.

Existing and new TRFs remain valid, and the update does not change the status of previously received results.

4. IELTS Remains Accepted for UK Purposes

In March 2026, IELTS confirmed that the UK government continues to accept IELTS.

At the same time, candidates should distinguish between ordinary IELTS and tests specifically required for UK visa purposes. UKVI-related requirements can be specific, so candidates should always verify the exact test they need before booking.

5. Preparation Must Match the Test Format

The IELTS Academic test continues to assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Academic test takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes overall, with Speaking lasting around 11–14 minutes.

In 2026, preparation should therefore include both English-language development and familiarity with the actual delivery method.

Candidates should practise:

• Timed Reading
• Listening with different accents
• Structured Writing
• Speaking fluently and clearly
• Typing where computer delivery applies
• Completing full mock tests
