For nurses planning to register with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), meeting the English language requirements and completing the Computer Based Test (CBT) are important steps in the registration process.
The NMC has previously introduced temporary measures to support internationally educated nurses whose registration journeys were affected by OSCE centre closures and other disruptions. These measures were particularly relevant to candidates whose IELTS or OET results were due to expire before they could complete their final assessment.
English Language Test Validity
The NMC has consistently emphasised the importance of English language proficiency because effective communication is essential for safe and effective patient care.
Under the temporary arrangements described in the original NMC update, some nurses were able to provide additional evidence that they had maintained their English proficiency after their IELTS or OET validity expired.
For example, eligible candidates already working in the UK or certain major English-speaking countries could provide a reference from their line manager confirming their English language competence. If the evidence was considered insufficient, the candidate could be required to take the English language test again.
Candidates whose English test had expired before the applicable eligibility period, or those living outside the specified countries, could be required to obtain a new valid IELTS or OET result.
These arrangements were designed to help nurses whose registration process had been delayed for reasons outside their control.
What About Online English Tests?
The original update also stated that the NMC was not accepting online English language tests at that time, while discussions with test providers were continuing.
Because NMC requirements can change, nurses should always check the latest requirements before booking an examination or submitting evidence.
CBT Validity Extension
Another important part of the update concerned CBT results.
The NMC announced an extension of six months for certain CBT results that were due to expire between 1 March 2020 and 31 December 2020. This was intended to provide additional time for candidates whose registration progress had been affected by the disruption during the pandemic.
